Why beginners are taught to make wudu, sit in a clean place, and clean their mouth before reciting the Qur'an.
Before a beginner picks up the mushaf, scholars have always emphasized a small set of habits that prepare both body and heart for recitation.
The majority view, drawn from the verse "None shall touch it except the purified" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:79), is that one should be in a state of wudu when handling the mushaf. Reciting from memory without wudu is permitted, but wudu is still recommended out of respect.
A clean sitting place — free from filth and distraction — helps the heart settle. Bedrooms, prayer corners, or a quiet spot at home all work; what matters is calm and cleanliness.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged the use of the miswak, especially before recitation, so that the mouth that carries the words of Allah is itself clean.
The slide intentionally stays short. Detailed rulings about wudu's conditions, masah on socks, and the differences between madhhabs belong in fiqh study — not in a beginner's first pass through the rules of tilawat.
