Lam in Allah

The lam in Allah is heavy or light based on the vowel of the letter immediately before the word Allah in connected recitation. If Allah starts the recitation, the lam is heavy.

Heavy Lam

هُوَ اللَّهُhuwa AllahHe is Allah

مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللَّهِmuhammadur rasool AllahMuhammad is the Messenger of Allah

Light Lam

بِسْمِ اللَّهِbismillahIn the name of Allah

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِalhamdu lillahAll praise to Allah

Raa is pronounced heavy when it has a fatha or damma, or when it is sakin preceded by a fatha or damma. It is light when it has a kasra or is influenced by a kasra in applicable cases.
